Fraternity and Sorority Advisory Council

Mission

The Fraternity and Sorority Advisory Council (FSAC) reports to the Vice President for Student and Academic Services, the Dean of Students, and the Associate Dean of Students for Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, on broad matters of policy and planning for recognized fraternities and sororities at Cornell University.

By-Laws

FSAC members are expected to know the strengths and challenges of the Greek system, understand the programs offered, and be familiar with the Fraternity and Sorority Strategic Plan. Members may also perform supplemental functions such as issue studies, as agreed upon by the Vice President and the FSAC membership, but shall not engage in administrative matters. The Vice President shall report to the Trustee Committee on Academic Affairs and Campus Life and to the Cornell Council Committee on Student and Academic Services on the work of the Advisory Council upon request.

Composition

FSAC shall consist of at least twenty-eight (28) members to be selected as follows:

  1. Trustees of the University (4) 
  2. Presidents of the Alumni Interfraternity Council, Alumnae Panhellenic Advisory Council, and Alumni Multicultural Greek Letter Advisory Council (3) 
  3. Alumni (one of whom will serve as chair) who have had affiliation with a fraternity or sorority and at least one from a University-owned chapter house for three-year staggered terms (8) 
  4. Faculty members (at least one of whom has had affiliation within a fraternity or sorority organization) (4) 
  5. Presidents of the Panhellenic, MGLC, and Interfraternity Councils (3) The Dean of Students, Associate Dean of Students for Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, Vice President for Student and Academic Services, Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer, Director of External Relations, and Assistant Director of External Relations for Student and Academic Services shall serve as ex-officio members of the Council (6).

Duties

The FSAC shall:

  1. Advise the Vice President of Student and Academic Services, Dean of Students, and Associate Dean of Students for Fraternity and Sorority Affairs on broad matters of policy and planning for recognized fraternities and sororities at Cornell University; 
  2. Develop an annual report on the state of the fraternities and sororities to be presented to the senior administration. The annual report shall be prepared by the chair, with appropriate review and approval by the membership; 
  3. With the approval of the Vice President of Student and Academic Services, conduct studies and evaluations on fraternity and sorority issues and report findings to the Vice President of Student and Academic Services and/or other appropriate administrators.

Meetings

The FSAC shall meet as a body at least twice a year. The Associate Dean of Students for Fraternity and Sorority Affairs shall report on the state of campus fraternities and sororities at each meeting of the FSAC. Meetings of subcommittees may occur as appropriate.
