Policy for Alumni Recognition Credit for Private Houses with University Approved Capital Campaigns

Policy:

The following is an outline of the Cornell University gift recognition credit policy for gifts from alumni to private fraternities and sororities involved in capital campaigns. These recommendations are subject to the review and approval of the Executive Staff and University Counsel:

  • Gift recognition credit on payments will only be given during a University-approved, active campaign for capital improvements. See the protocol sheet and details on the approval process.
  • In the case of private houses, an active campaign is defined as: a fundraising effort on behalf of a fraternity or sorority that has received University clearance by having the appropriate alumni structure, feasibility study, undergraduate support and a management plan in place and is approved by the Vice President of Student and Academic Services and the Director of Cornell Development.
  • The chapters must provide the Director of Information Services with giving information in a timely fashion to ensure appropriate University gift recognition credit. For recognition purposes, gift reports are expected: October 1, February 1, March 1, and June 1. Data is submitted in electronic format, and includes Donor’s full name, Cornell class year, gift amount, gift date, and the details on any multi-year commitments. Gift information should include copies of donor remittance letters and donor checks or other validating documentation.
  • Gift recognition credit on these contributions will be given for University Recognition purposes only – Reunion campaign credit and giving society membership-- NOT tax deductibility.
  • Credit for reunion campaigns is only given for gifts that are made the year the individual is celebrating their Cornell undergraduate reunion. Multi-year commitments of up to three consecutive years, receive recognition if each year’s contribution is at the Tower Club level or higher per year.
  • The alumni leadership will share their lists of prospective givers so that solicitation efforts can be coordinated with other University fundraising efforts -- not for clearance and approval.
  • The University reserves the right to limit the number of houses undertaking capital campaigns at any given time.
  • The University will convene the appropriate University staff to review the process as needed and make recommendations for its continuation, modification or discontinuation.
